When Jason McDougall purchased the Fields company in 2012, the stores were on the verge of closure. But where many people saw an unfixable problem, McDougall saw an opportunity. In 2015, just three years later, Fields was recognized as one of the largest companies in British Columbia, and they were able to open new stores there and in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

McDougall has always had a positive outlook on life, and his career especially. Growing up in the tiny town of Liberty, Saskatchewan taught him the value of persistence and dreaming big, and right after he graduated from high school, he decided to start his first business. He’d always been interested in taking chances, and so he bought a large number of magnetic tapes and resold them in just a few months for thousands of dollars. From there, he continued to take chances and stay optimistic, and soon opened three SaveMart outlets in Western Canada (his first foray into the wholesale/retail business). Although things didn’t always go perfectly – he lost a large sum of money in the stock market at the age of 18– his perseverance lead to greater successes.

Before turning thirty, McDougall had become the CEO of Bargain Castle Discount Centre, and found tremendous success selling discounted items to Canadians who needed them, even in competitive markets. However, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Although it was tough, McDougall kept his head up and stayed active and positive, and was cured just a few years later, at the age of twenty eight. Jason McDougall, Fields CEO has been honored to have Mr. Segal ,a business and philanthropic legend of Vancouver, British Columbia, as someone to aspire to. Their meetings were referenced in Peter Legge’s book, Lunch With Joe, a chronicling of the business and life advice Segal doled out and received from his normal seat in the Vancouver Four Seasons, where he sat every day for thirty years, entertaining a who’s who of Vancouver luminaries.

Segal has always had a passion for helping his community any way he could. A very successful businessman, he contributed large portions of his fortune to help everyone in Vancouver live better lives. He is a self-made entrepreneur living his lifelong dream as an author and motivational speaker. He and his family have made it possible for many charitable organizations to operate in the city of Vancouver and the surrounding area.
